Delta Co saves Nunby 1-186 IN BN PAO on September 19, 2005 at 8:50 AMOver two weeks alone in her home takes toll on retired Nun. 3rd squad, 2nd platoon D Co. was patrolling on Delgado when they found 83 year old retired nun, Dorothy Funk. She had been alone in her home since Hurricane Katrina turned out the lights and flooded her home. After spending some time in water up to her knees and living only on what she had available, she was down to two bottles of sprite and 2 small cans of vienna sausage. 3rd squad immediately gave her water and rendered assistance. The squad medic, on checking her found her to be bruised, dehydrated and a bit delirious."The water in her home knocked her around a bit so she was pretty bruised up", said SSG Steven Jones. He added that despite being ill from the toxic waters she was living in, Dorothy, who was very nervous from the presence of five armed Guardsmen, didn't want to leave. "I figured since she was a Catholic nun...I said a prayer over her and that put her at ease", Jones said. The squad leader called an ambulance and Dorothy was taken to a hospital. | 1-186 IN BN PAO
